FOREGIN LANGUAGE IS JUST LIKE YOUR FIRST LANGUAGE
Foreign Language is Just Like Your First Language
One of the mental blocks in a language-learning is that
we are likely to assume that a foreign language is different from your mother tongue
because you do not understand that language.
They sound different intuitively to you from what you hear on a regular basis.
This is an interesting part.
They sound different so that we are attracted by them.
Similary, they create a certain mental boundary
This uncertainty generates fear and mental block.
This makes a language-learning seem hard
because we tend to focus on the differences between them.
Then people
get overwhelmed with them.
It is true that
a foreign language must be different from your mother tongue.
On the other hand,
that’s why you are going to learn that language.
There is nothing wrong with being different.
We are not going to learn the same language, right?
The joy of a language-learning also
lies in this gap
but we focus on the differences when the gap is huge
, which may discourage you from learning more.
Treat it as just another language that you are going to learn.
Strategically,
it would be better for you to find the similarities
between your mother tongue and a language that you are learning.
You can make the full use of your mother tonguage to understand a new language.
A language is used to communicate with people.
The foundation of a language does not change. People communicate in the similar way with different languages.
The purpose of communication is very similar.
Our communications consist in asking
questions and answering those questions.
Compare textbooks of a language-learning,
it starts from greetings normally then introduce yourself.
We learn from “Good morning” to “my name’s Hilano Aquihisa”.
How do people introduce themselves in your country?
Start with a name, where he or she is from, what he or she likes.
You already know the intent of the people by understanding the context of introducing yourself.
Therefore, you can guess where the
conversations go.
I don’t want to simplify this topic.
However,
a language serves for the same
purpose regardless of whether it is your mother tongue or a foreign language.
Thanks for reading,
Hilano Aquihisa
