FAMILIARITY
Familiarity
One thing that I need to stress
in terms of a language-learning
is the magnitude of Familiarity.
Even though
we commonly deem a foreign language as
one coherent concept in a broad set
since it is a language from a foreign country,
however,
I would rather dissect it into two categories.
One is, what I call,
dissimilar/unfamiliar language.
The other is
similar/familiar language.
For example,
Japanese and Chinese have partially common grounds in writing.
Therefore, they are similar in that sense.
Spanish and Italian are similar as well in writing and speaking.
However, Chinese and Spanish are dissimilar in writing and speaking.
They use different letters, grammars, and sound totally different.
Geographically, they are so far.
They are foreign and unfamiliar each other.
What does it mean here?
What it means is that
your mother tongue plays an important role in familiarity.
Being familiar is advantageous in learning a language.
If a language that you are learning is like your mother tongue,
familiarity enables you to learn it faster, more effortlessly and more comfortably.
Yes, a similar/familiar languages is
your siblings or cousin!
